Falls and Immobility

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) reports that between 700,000 and 1,000,000 people fall in a hospital every year. These falls may result in serious injuries that impair function and mobility, and can increase length of stay. Research shows that approximately one third of these falls may be preventable.

Reduction in healthcare-associated falls is part of HealthInsight’s commitment to reducing patient harm by 20 percent over the next two years. HealthInsight’s plan for assisting hospitals in reducing falls will include providing technical assistance, self-assessment tools, educational webinars and conferences, and links to evidence-based best practices surrounding fall prevention and improving immobility.
