Mechanical ventilation is essential and life-saving for some patients. However, ventilator-associated events (VAEs), including pneumonia and other infection-related ventilator-associated complications (IVAC), are detrimental to patients and increase hospital costs. VAEs increase the length of ventilator support, ICU stay and mortality. The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) reports that there is about a 10 percent mortality rate for patients who develop a VAE.
Reduction in VAE is part of HealthInsight’s commitment to reducing patient harm by 20 percent over the next two years. HealthInsight’s plan for assisting hospitals in reducing VAEs will include providing technical assistance, self-assessment tools, educational webinars and conferences, and links to evidencd-based best practices surrounding VAE prevention.
