Each year, more than 2.5 million people in the United States develop pressure ulcers. These skin lesions bring pain, associated risk for serious infection and increased health care utilization. Pressure ulcer prevention presents an important challenge in acute care hospitals. There are a number of best practices that have been shown to be effective in reducing the occurrence of pressure ulcers, but these practices are not always used consistently.
Reduction in healthcare-associated pressure ulcers is part of HealthInsight’s commitment to reducing patient harm by 20 percent over the next two years. HealthInsight’s plan for assisting hospitals in reducing pressure ulcers will include providing technical assistance, self-assessment tools, educational webinars and conferences, and links to evidence-based best practices surrounding pressure ulcer prevention.
